(NC) Most of us think of this time of year as fun in the sun, but many areas across Ontario are also hit by fierce storms. Winds, rain and lightning can cause trees to fall on power lines and lead to outages. Be safe with these tips from Hydro One:
- Stay clear of any downed lines or equipment by at least 10 metres. Never assume that they are safe to approach. Report hazards by calling 1-800-434-1235.
- Avoid trees and other vegetation. During a storm, heavy branches can fall and damage cars and houses. Stay safe by avoiding being near vegetation where possible.
- Sign up for outage alerts so you’ll know when your power is out, when you can expect it to be restored, and when the power is back on. Alerts are completely customizable and can be sent through text or email. You can also visit the web to view estimated times of restoration for your area.
- Be prepared for a storm by creating a 72-hour emergency preparedness kit. The kit should include supplies such as canned food that won’t spoil, water, a first aid kit, and a battery-powered flashlight and radio, among other items.
